The War on Food

October 24, 2011

It’s been a longstanding phrase of the war on drugs…but lately it seems like there’s another “war.” It’s well underway from several fronts, each group for their own views and points. It’s also leaves no way to reconcile with all, which goes towards food choices.

This morning “Big Vinny” from this season’s Biggest Loser posted on his Facebook page ” Run from doubt, disable disbelief, find hope, and make all things u dream reality. Your worth more and u deserve great things but you have to reach for them and remember if u fall fall reaching”. He wasn’t speaking just about food. He wasn’t defining himself by food, and has openly supported food choices. He’s made no bones about enjoying a balanced diet that includes meat – including rabbit! – but many find other battle lines.

They don’t want just decisions for themselves, but to decide what you eat. Between bans on salt and taxes on certain foods, between GMO and organic, between small farm produced and large farm produced, between vegetarian and omnivore – food choices are a blessing many don’t even see.

At the same time there has to be financial support behind the scenes – solely being a customer helps greatly but that’s only after it’s produced. It’s after someone else had the funds to finance the growing of the food, from land to seed to labor to feed to finished food. With large corporations the costs of production are covered with investments. The small operation typically covers those costs themselves.

To do that then hear the battle lines drawn from GMO wheat and peanuts (there aren’t any grown!) to a host of other ‘fear factor’ issues…it makes it confusing and difficult to navigate studies that prove this then other studies that prove that.

Certainly there are food issues. Food allergies are a serious health issue and it warrants attention. However, the degree of division and the nasty attacks, even at those who agree and offer choices, makes one wonder if food safety or being right is more important.

Food only makes someone fat if they eat more than they need. This is true of animals like horses and dogs as well as people. Increase exercise and remove food and there will be weight loss. Many don’t take it to the level Vinny has, working out for several hours a day to get healthy because his health depends on it. But if we can do even half of what he does isn’t it worth it?

Food is something most take for granted until it’s not available. If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of a hungry child you see something different. If you’ve ever been three days short in the week and nothing to eat for those three days you understand food differently.

Food is a comfort, a filler, something to pass the time and it’s little wonder why we gain weight. It’s a reward or an “I deserve this” message. Sometimes the hardest thing is pushing away from the plate.

Let’s celebrate food choices…and not remove them from others.
