Tuesday Terms – Sussex Chickens

March 13, 2012

Meet the light Sussex. This is a beautiful bird from the UK. The Sussex is a dual purpose small farm chicken. Like many English varieties, they have white skin as opposed to the yellow skin on barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds and American favored birds. The Sussex is more common in the speckled variety, but gaining in the light. There’s also a more uncommon red variety.

Above is a closer view of the speckles on the speckled variety. Much like an Appaloosa horse, no two of these are exactly alike.

This is a quiet, curious breed that is excellent for those with children. They’re friendly and observant, and a good producer of fresh eggs.
