Rhode Island White Chickens

April 26, 2012

Some new additions arrived today – a small starter group of Delaware chickens as well as Rhode Island Whites, and 2 cockerels (males) of Speckled Sussex and Ancona to go with the hens of those breeds that we have.

Rhode Island Whites are a sister breed to the more popular Rhode Island Reds, but with white feathers instead of red. We’ll have photos as they grow – just a quick post tonight.

Don’t forget to spread the word about our fundraising project with special sale items – we’re working towards a more substantial rabbit barn as well as an outside brooder for the chicks that are arriving. Our Cornish will be here next week. Stay tuned!

Hi – thanks for visiting! We tried to get some last year but they were sold out. We started earlier this year, but they were sold out in February! We got on the list and finally got ours this week. Once they are matured and start laying we’ll be hatching some, but if you’re interested before then places like Ideal Hatchery might be able to get you on a waiting list. They’re hard to find! Am looking forward to seeing these grow up!

Have you ever purchased your Rhode Island Whites? Are you going for the real breed the Rose Comb or the non-real breed Single Comb that the hatcheries are passing off as Rhode Island Whites? The true and real Rhode Island Whites are very hard to find. If you are interested maybe check out the face book pager for Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites. If you have the real RIW’s I would like to maybe get some from you.

I have a couple, looking to get more. Can’t buy what we can’t find and afford though. Most access is through hatcheries; if you know of some others that are reasonable am interested, as it sounds like what I have isn’t fit for your tastes. Would be more apt to cross with Buckeyes to get the comb than Rhode Island reds to sex link expand. Beyond that, options are very limited.
