How Do We Keep Animals Cool in Heat Waves?

July 1, 2012

By 11 a.m. it was 99 degrees – a temperature that can render bucks sterile and that has killed many rabbits despite attempts by owners to keep them cool. Ahead of the heat wave we installed a misting system. The chief disadvantage is the wet ground under the misters, but the trade off is 20 degrees cooler temperatures, much more comfortable animals and capturing some of that mist to water songbirds and rabbits as well as plants.

The hens that are roaming loose go in there or near the hoop during the heat of the day – a testament to the comfort!
