Kentucky Derby Day 2013 – Decades of Memories

May 4, 2013

Forty years ago an equine red monster stomped all over the track record when winning the Kentucky Derby. He is one of the most beloved of horses of a generation of people, some say the greatest of all time. It seems like just last week, but the beautiful chestnut son of Bold Ruler has been gone for years. Secretariat launched a three race performance that none since have topped. His records still stand, 40 years later. He was to many more than just a horse.

Just a few years after Secretariat, the undefeated Seattle Slew ran through Kentucky on his way to a Triple Crown, and a year later the rivalry of Affirmed and Alydar made another memory.

The Derby has been a means of both highs and lows. The heartbreak of a bleed that cost Demon’s Begone his spot in history during the 1987 Derby that was won by Alysheba was a low. The horses I picked haven’t always won but the Derby Day memories are many. A highlight in 1990 was Unbridled winning for his 92 year old owner.

Many are remembered, many have become outstanding sires and many are forgotten.

A new crop of hopefuls will take the track today, and one will stand alone tonight as the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner. Today, his history is made. When the horses come on the track, tradition takes hold like few other sports, singing a song that has been repeated for 138 years before.

It’s Derby day. And for two minutes this afternoon the sporting world looks at a part of agriculture often overlooked.
