Help! My Hen Crowed!

May 1, 2014

Any time one messes with animals there are always those who don’t read the books of how things are supposed to be.

Sometimes that causes alarm when facing with something – like raising a hen that crows. Common knowledge is that roosters crow, hens cluck, right? Some roosters crow easily and at odd things, like a silver Seabright that would crow when I called the cat! (See video!) He’d crow morning, afternoon, 3 a.m. – whenever I called “kitty kitty kitty”!

Sometimes, it’s less explained away when a hen does it. This isn’t a mistaken identity of “thought it was a pullet but it’s not” – this is a hen that starts laying eggs then…crows! Our little buff seabright is one of these, and I’d had a Dominique some years ago do the same.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThese are hens that seem confused? Why do they do that? Yes she’s a functioning hen. A trusted poultry keeper told me many moons ago it is possible – an injury to the oviduct can happen, interrupting the hormonal balance just enough that she will crow like a young rooster. This can be something like passing a large egg.

There are many other theories – from females that assume the hierarchy of position of males in the flock to several other ‘reasons’ that to me just don’t make sense!

Yes, it is possible for a hen to crow, and yes she can still lay eggs. The buff in the top part of the photo is doing just that!
